Planning for a Big Event? Here’s When to Schedule Your Procedure

Whether you’re preparing for a wedding, family reunion, vacation, graduation, milestone birthday, another once-in-a-lifetime event, or a lift transition like changing jobs or schools timing your cosmetic procedure is one of the most important decisions you’ll make.

At SARA Surgery in Morton Grove, one of the most common questions we hear is:

“How far in advance should I have my procedure?”

The answer depends on the treatment you’re considering. While everyone heals at their own pace, here are our general recommendations to help you look and feel your best when your big day arrives.

Major Surgeries: Plan at Least 6 Months Ahead

The most transformative procedures also require the longest recovery and healing period. Although you’ll likely feel much better within a few weeks, swelling continues to improve for several months, and scars mature over the course of a year.

We recommend scheduling these procedures at least six months before a major event, and even earlier if possible.

Examples include:

Planning ahead allows your body ample time to heal so you can enjoy your results with confidence.

Moderate Surgeries: About 3 Months Before

Many procedures have a shorter recovery but still benefit from several months of healing before an important occasion.

We typically recommend scheduling these procedures at least three months in advance.

These include:

Three months gives swelling time to resolve and allows scars to begin maturing.

Minor Surgical Procedures: 1–2 Months

Smaller surgical procedures generally involve shorter recoveries, but you’ll still want to allow time for incisions to heal completely.

Examples include:

  • Mole removal
  • Lipoma removal
  • Cyst removal
  • Earlobe repair
  • Minor scar revision

Scheduling these procedures at least one to two months before your event is usually ideal.

Botox and Dermal Fillers: One Month Ahead

Injectables may not require downtime, but they still require planning.

While many patients recover within days, occasional bruising, swelling, or the need for small touch-ups can occur.

We recommend receiving:

About one month before your event.

This allows plenty of time for your results to settle naturally.

Skin Treatments: 2–3 Weeks Before

If your goal is glowing, healthy skin, timing is important.

Many non-surgical treatments produce their best results after the skin has had time to heal and renew itself.

Ideal treatments include:

  • HydraFacial®
  • Superficial chemical peels
  • Microneedling
  • BBL® laser treatments
  • HALO® laser resurfacing

For most patients, scheduling these two to three weeks before a major event provides the perfect balance between healing and peak results.

Everyone Heals Differently

While these guidelines work for most patients, recovery is never exactly the same for everyone.

Factors such as:

  • Age
  • Overall health
  • Smoking status
  • Procedure complexity
  • Skin quality

can all influence healing timelines.

This is why personalized planning is so important.
