Evaluation Comes Before Cosmetic Treatment
Skin lesions have different causes and should not all be treated in the same way. A new or changing spot, a growth that bleeds, or a sore that does not heal warrants medical evaluation. A dermatologist may recommend a biopsy or other assessment before a cosmetic treatment decision.
If you already have a diagnosis, bring the biopsy report and the name of your treating clinician. If you are unsure what a lesion is, tell our team when arranging your visit so we can help direct your next steps.
Removal and Reconstruction
Depending on the diagnosis, size, depth, and location, treatment may involve removing the lesion and closing the resulting wound. Some smaller procedures can be performed with local anesthesia in the office. The appropriate setting and anesthesia depend on the individual case.
Dr. Sara R. Dickie considers the surrounding skin, nearby structures, and the likely scar when discussing repair. Larger or more complex wounds may need a different approach or more than one stage. Surgery creates a scar; the aim is thoughtful repair, not a promise of scar-free skin.
If Skin Cancer Is Involved
