Silicone VS. Saline Breast Implants

When considering breast augmentation, one of the most important decisions is choosing between silicone and saline implants. Each option has its benefits and unique characteristics, and the choice depends on your aesthetic goals and personal preferences. At SARA Surgery, our team is here to guide you through the decision-making process, ensuring you feel confident and informed before and after breast implant surgery.

Silicone Implants
  • Silicone implants are filled with a gel-like substance that closely mimics the natural feel of breast tissue.
  • Many patients prefer silicone implants for their soft, natural look and feel.
  • They are less likely to ripple, making them ideal for those with less natural breast tissue to cover the implant.
  • Silicone implants typically require a larger incision for placement.
  • MRI screenings may be necessary to detect any potential ruptures.
Saline Implants
  • Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution and can be adjusted in size during surgery for more precise results.
  • They may feel firmer than silicone implants and may be more prone to rippling that can show through the skin in patients who are very thin or have a very low amount of natural breast tissue.
  • If a saline implant ruptures, the body absorbs the saline solution harmlessly.  If the implant ruptures, or breaks, the affected breast will immediately appear smaller and flatter than the opposite side.
  • Because they are inserted empty and filled once inside, saline implants generally require smaller incisions.
Are Breast Implants Safe?

With years of research and advancements in medical technology, breast implants have been proven to be both safe and reliable. The FDA has approved both silicone and saline implants for cosmetic breast augmentation and breast reconstruction after cancer or from a congenital anomaly, with stringent guidelines in place to ensure the safety and well-being of patients.

Silicone and saline implants are made from materials that have been shown to be biocompatible, meaning they are safe to use within the human body. Both types of implants undergo rigorous testing to ensure they meet high standards for durability, quality, and safety. Additionally, the surgical techniques used to place the implants have been refined over the years, resulting in a safer and more precise procedure.

Getting Started and Pre-Surgery Consultation

Before undergoing breast augmentation, a consultation with Dr. Dickie at SARA Surgery is essential. During your consultation, we’ll assess your health, discuss your goals, and determine the most suitable breast implant type for you. Pre-surgery recommendations often include stopping smoking, adjusting certain medications, and ensuring you’re in optimal health for the procedure.

Before-Surgery-Safety

Once you have decided on an implant type and the incision placement of the implant you will be provided with warranty information specific to your implant type by the manufacturer.  This warranty will protect you and at times provide financial assistance in the rare event of a rupture, or scar problems, known as capsular contracture, occurs.  You will also be provided with an Implant Decision Checklist to ensure all your questions have been answered.

Post-Surgery Recovery – What to Expect

Following breast augmentation, you can expect some swelling, discomfort, and tightness in the chest area. Dr. Dickie will provide specific aftercare instructions, related to limitation in activities, preventting certain arm movements and heavy lifting.  You will also be instructed to wear a soft bra or ace wrap to gently support your new implants.  You will be given prescription medications during the recovery period to help you heal and prevent infections. Most patients can return to light activities within a week, but full recovery takes several weeks.  Implants will naturally settle in the first three months after surgery, so expect your final results to take time, but you will feel like yourself and have minimal pain within 2 weeks.
