Earlobe repair is one of the most common minor ear procedures performed by plastic surgeons.
An earlobe may gradually stretch from years of wearing earrings, or it can tear suddenly if an earring is accidentally pulled. In other cases, a piercing hole slowly elongates until earrings no longer sit properly—or eventually pull completely through the lobe.
Surgical repair typically involves removing the damaged edges and carefully reconstructing the earlobe to restore a more natural shape. Because the earlobe is small and accessible, the procedure can usually be performed under local anesthesia.
Correcting Sagging or Aging Earlobes
Our ears age, too.
Over time, earlobes can become longer, thinner, or more lax. Heavy earrings can contribute to stretching, while the natural loss of collagen and elasticity can change the overall shape of the lobe.

Scars and Problems From Previous Piercings

Can You Pierce Your Ears Again After Earlobe Repair?
In many cases, absolutely.
After an earlobe has been repaired or reconstructed, we generally recommend allowing the tissue to heal and mature for approximately three to six months before considering another piercing.
There is another piece of advice we strongly recommend: go back to your plastic surgeon for the new piercing.
After surgery, the internal scar tissue and anatomy of the earlobe are different. Your surgeon knows exactly where the previous repair was performed and can select a piercing location that avoids compromising the reconstructed area.
A few extra minutes of planning can help protect a surgical result that took months to fully heal.

You don’t need to have a major deformity to ask about ear surgery. Patients come to plastic surgeons with concerns ranging from prominent ears to something as simple as an earring that no longer sits correctly.
