Remembering Dolly Parton: An Original Voice for Owning Your Choices

As the world remembers Dolly Parton following her passing at age 80, there is so much to celebrate: an extraordinary songwriter and performer, a groundbreaking businesswoman, a philanthropist, and a personality whose authenticity helped make her one of the most universally beloved entertainers of her generation.

At SARA Surgery, there is another part of Dolly’s legacy that feels especially relevant to the conversations we have with patients every day: Dolly owned her aesthetic choices.

Today, celebrity transparency around Botox, fillers, facelifts, breast augmentation, and other cosmetic procedures has become increasingly common. Dolly was talking openly about plastic surgery long before that kind of honesty became fashionable. Even recent remembrances of her life have highlighted how unapologetic she was about both her appearance and her cosmetic surgery.

She Created the Dolly She Wanted the World to See

Dolly understood something that remains important in modern plastic surgery: your appearance can be something you actively choose.

Her larger-than-life blonde hair, glamorous makeup, sparkling wardrobe, curves, and cosmetic procedures were all part of an image she deliberately created. She famously described that aesthetic as a country girl’s idea of glamour.

What made it so compelling was that none of it seemed to diminish her authenticity. In many ways, it reinforced it. Dolly could acknowledge that parts of her outward appearance were intentionally enhanced while remaining completely comfortable with who she was underneath it all.

Plastic Surgery Doesn’t Have to Come From Insecurity

This is an important distinction.

There can be a misconception that choosing plastic surgery means someone is unhappy with themselves, lacks confidence, or wants approval from other people. That isn’t necessarily the case.

For the right patient, cosmetic surgery can simply be a personal decision: “This is how I want to look. This is how I want to present myself to the world.”

Dolly’s enormous talent, confidence, humor, business success, and generosity certainly weren’t created in an operating room. Plastic surgery was simply one of the tools she chose to help create the outward persona that felt right to her.

Decades Ahead of Today’s Transparency

We’re currently seeing a refreshing change in aesthetic medicine. More people are acknowledging the treatments they’ve had instead of pretending their appearance is entirely the result of good genes, exercise, expensive moisturizer, or drinking enough water.

That transparency is important.

When celebrities deny procedures or attribute dramatic changes entirely to lifestyle, it can create unrealistic expectations about aging. Open conversations about plastic surgery, Botox, fillers, laser treatments, and other aesthetic procedures help people better understand what these treatments can—and cannot—accomplish.

Dolly was having that conversation decades before social media made it fashionable.

Authenticity Doesn’t Mean Doing Nothing

Perhaps that’s one of the most useful lessons Dolly leaves behind for the aesthetics world.

Authenticity isn’t necessarily about leaving everything untouched. It can also mean understanding yourself well enough to make deliberate choices about your appearance without embarrassment or apology.

Plastic surgery should never be about trying to become somebody else. A good result should still allow the individual underneath it to shine through.

The SARA Approach: The Beauty of You

That philosophy closely aligns with our approach at SARA Surgery in Morton Grove.

Dr. Sara Dickie believes in honest conversations, realistic expectations, and personalized treatment plans. From facelifts and eyelid surgery to breast surgery, body contouring, Botox, and fillers, the goal isn’t to create a standardized version of beauty. It’s to understand how you want to present yourself and determine what can safely and realistically help you get there.

Dolly Parton spent a lifetime reminding people that you can be glamorous, enhanced, confident, funny, intelligent, successful—and completely authentic—all at the same time.

That’s a legacy worth remembering.
