Dr. Sara Dickie Featured in Aesthetics Unfiltered

We’re excited to share another national recognition for Dr. Sara Dickie and the work we do at SARA Surgery.

Dr. Dickie was recently featured in “Cut Your Losses” from Aesthetics Unfiltered, a piece by beauty journalist Jolene Edgar exploring one of the biggest shifts happening in plastic surgery today: the growing demand for body contouring following significant weight loss.

It’s a conversation we’re having more and more often at SARA Surgery as GLP-1 medications and other approaches help patients achieve substantial changes in their weight and health.

Weight Loss Is Changing Plastic Surgery

Losing a significant amount of weight can be an incredible accomplishment, but the body doesn’t always contract along with the number on the scale.

Stretched skin may remain around the abdomen, breasts, arms, thighs, back, face, and neck. For some patients, this becomes the next stage of their transformation—not losing more weight, but addressing the skin and contours left behind.

Edgar’s article highlights just how significant this trend has become. Recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show tremendous interest in plastic surgery among patients using GLP-1 medications, with arm lifts, thigh lifts, and other upper-body lifting procedures among the areas seeing notable growth.

There Is No Single “Post-Weight-Loss Surgery”

One of the most important things patients should understand is that body contouring after major weight loss isn’t one operation.

Every body responds differently to weight loss. One patient may primarily have loose abdominal skin, while another may notice more significant changes to the breasts, arms, thighs, or back.

Procedures may include:

  • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to remove excess abdominal skin and address the abdominal wall when appropriate
  • Arm lift (brachioplasty) to remove hanging skin from the upper arms
  • Thigh lift to improve loose skin and contour of the thighs
  • Breast lift to reshape breasts that have lost volume and support
  • Lower body lift for more extensive skin laxity around the waist, abdomen, hips, and buttocks
  • Back and upper-body contouring to address rolls and excess skin around the torso
  • Facelift and neck lift when significant weight loss contributes to facial and neck laxity

Liposuction or fat grafting may also play a role, but removing fat alone cannot correct significant loose skin.

Why These Procedures Often Need to Be Staged

Patients who have experienced major weight loss sometimes arrive at their consultation ready to address everything at once. We understand the enthusiasm, but safety always comes first.

There are limits to how much surgery should reasonably be performed during a single operation. Longer procedures can increase surgical and recovery demands, and combining too many areas can make everyday movement particularly difficult during the early healing period.

For example, recovering from procedures involving the arms, legs, and abdominal core simultaneously could make getting in and out of bed or simply moving around safely much more challenging.

Dr. Dickie develops a staged body contouring plan when appropriate, prioritizing procedures based on anatomy, patient goals, safety, recovery logistics, and which areas will have the greatest impact.

GLP-1 Patients Have Some Unique Considerations

For patients who have lost weight using medications such as semaglutide or tirzepatide, planning also involves understanding where they are in their treatment journey.

Are you still actively losing weight? Have you reached a stable weight? Are you transitioning to GLP-1 maintenance therapy? What does your nutrition look like? Have you maintained adequate muscle mass?

These questions matter because stable weight, adequate nutrition, and overall health are important considerations before elective plastic surgery.

Sometimes the best surgical advice is to wait a little longer. The goal is not simply to perform surgery—it is to perform the right surgery at the right point in your journey.

National Recognition for a Conversation We’re Having Every Day

We’re proud to see Dr. Sara Dickie included in a national conversation about how plastic surgery is evolving alongside modern weight-loss treatments.

At SARA Surgery in Morton Grove, post-weight-loss body contouring is never approached as a standardized package. Dr. Dickie evaluates the entire body, listens to what bothers the patient most, and creates a realistic plan that may involve one procedure or a carefully staged series of surgeries.

That individualized approach reflects the philosophy behind Surgical Aesthetics & Reconstructive Arts: excellent plastic surgery isn’t about turning patients into someone else. It’s about using surgical expertise to help the outside better reflect how they already feel.
